October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the growing digital threats and the critical need for stronger cybersecurity measures across the globe. For Ethiopia, this month carries particular importance as we continue to develop and safeguard our digital landscape. The Ethiopian Information System Audit Association (EISAA) is dedicated to enhancing cybersecurity capacity in Ethiopia through education, collaboration, and the promotion of best practices.
A recent article on the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) places Ethiopia, along with Uganda and Zambia, in Tier 4 countries that face significant gaps in cybersecurity infrastructure but have begun basic cybersecurity development. These countries share common challenges: underdeveloped legal frameworks, limited technical expertise, and insufficient cybersecurity awareness among citizens and businesses.
What Tier 4 Countries Need to Focus On
To strengthen their cybersecurity posture, countries like Ethiopia must focus on at the minimum the following three areas.
Building Expertise: There is a critical need for skilled cybersecurity professionals. Associations like EISAA are crucial in developing local talent through training, certifications, and awareness programs.
Strengthening Legal Frameworks: Tier 4 countries need to develop robust cybersecurity policies, ensuring laws are in place to address cyber threats, protect critical infrastructure, and secure personal data.
Collaboration: Regional and international cooperation is key. Sharing best practices and collaborating on cyber defense strategies will accelerate development in countries with limited resources. One of EISAA’s key initiatives this October hosted a webinar on Data Protection & Cybersecurity Challenges in Ethiopia and Beyond, in collaboration with Scratch & Script from Kenya. The event were explore the pressing data protection and cybersecurity issues faced by Ethiopia, the region, and beyond.
Awareness and Education: Public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives are essential to cultivate a culture of cybersecurity at all levels of society.
This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, EISAA encourages stakeholders to prioritize cybersecurity in every aspect of digital development. Together, we can close the gap and ensure a safer digital future for Ethiopia and its neighbors.
